Instructional Objectives:
Students will create a wiki site focusing on a real world problem that has been affecting teens for centuries (teen pregnancy).

Students will provide relevant supporting information in the form of causes, solutions, questions, responsibilities of society in helping their community, as well as describing the rights of individuals involved in these situations. In additions students will provide images and helpful websites/resources on their wiki site.

ACTION
Before Class Preparation:
I will need to make sure that I have signed out time in the computer lab in advance so that my students can conduct research. I will also need to put my students in to groups of two that I chose so that I know work will be completed. I will also need to create a rubric so my students will know exactly what is expected of them. I will also need to create handouts to keep students on task.

During Class:

Days 3 and 4
Students will begin research. Students will use this time to find two to three sources/information on teen pregnancy. They will focus on statistics and reasons why students might be more susceptible to teen pregnancy.
Students will find out the history of teen pregnancy and the policies set in place for the goverment.

End of Day 4
Students will then share with the class one surprising fact about teen pregnancy and one reason students will be at risk to teen pregnancy. Students will discuss their solution to the problem.
Handout with information
Day 5, 6, and 7
Students will create wiki site including the following categories: information/resources,
solution to problem,
who is at risk?
Group members,
other

MONITOR

Teachers will walk around each students computer to make sure they are on task and answer any questions that may arise. Teacher will have students give the information they collect to them personally for review. Teachers will allow each student to present their information.

Accomidations/Extentions: Students with special needs or learning disabilities wil be given extended time to find their research online. Another option would be to have my students go with my co-teacher to her classroom and do this activity as a group while my co-teacher leads the activity.

Back Up Plan: Teachers should have access to library for students to conitue research in the event the internet is down.

EVALUATION

Assessment for student learning will be on going. For example are students paying attention? Are they on task? Did they turn in their research? Did they sovle the problem? Teacher will evaluate research and make sure that the information gathered is factual and relevent.

Instructional Objective(s): The purpose of this lesson is to have students write a persuasive, reasoned argument on a public issue (teen pregnancy). This will be done on a personal blog where students will be able to read others and comment on each other's opinions on how to solve the problem. The end project will emphasize research, writing, and technology skills. Students will be able to use some of the same research found in lesson one to write their paper on their blog.

ACTION:

Before-Class Preparation: Secure a computer lab with access to the internet. Find a website to have students create their own personal blog. Create a rubric for students to follow. Rubric should include how many references/sources students need to include in their blog along with length of assignment.

Acomodations and Extentions: English language learners can do part of the assignment in their own language and then translate what is meant. The assistance of the ESL teacher can help with this. Students with dissabilities can use the assistance of a co-teacher. Students with dissabilities and ESL students can be given extra time to complete the assignment and comment on 3 students blogs instead of 5.

Back Up Plan: Students can handwrite a rough draft of this and then peer edit each other's persuasive papers leaving comments, suggesttions, and questions.

Evaulation:
Lesson Reflections and Notes: Assessment of students work will be ongoing. Final product will be evaluated using a rubric that includes the following:

  • 3 to 4 references/sources
  • 2-3 pages in length
